Rivers

Rivers may well be the single most photographed natural feature in the landscape.

They come in a wide range of styles and sizes. They all tell us something about the landscape through which they flow, whilst also revealing their dynamic nature.

Sometimes they have been modified by human activity, at other times and places they are as nature intended.

Image 25 The River Wye (Derbyshire, UK) has been modified by adding a sequence of boulder steps that result in deeper water behind them, thus creating fishing pools.

Falling water and faster stream flows offer both beautiful images and the need to think hard about the shutter speed that needs to be used.

The slower the shutter speed the more 'milky' the water will look.

The calmer the water the more it will reflect the sky. The lighting of the setting can be as important as the water itself.

When the story you want to tell is made evident just by the water itself, then leave out the surroundings and concentrate on the detail that says it all.

Lakes

Calm lakes act like mirrors and provide a reflection of the landscape behind them.

Go for calm if you want to bring peace and tranquility to your viewers.

As with most photographs, an interesting foreground helps to 'lift' the image above the average.

Although this is a natural lake, it is used for pleasure purposes as well as water supply.
